Big Sky
Overview
Not one of the most well-known of the US resorts, Big Sky is nonetheless among the top 10. Found in Montana, it has several great attributes - uncrowded runs, an excellent lift system, no queues, a great snow record and some superb expert skiing. This is not the ideal resort for non-skiers, but there is a fair variety of skiing for all. It's rather spread out across the 136km that the 2 mountains, Andesite and Lone, offer. Advanced skiers will be in 7th heaven on Lone Mountain, with couloirs, powder and steeps to match those offered anywhere (40% of the runs are advanced). Boarders will also have a new park to enjoy.
The resort itself has a 'Wild West' feel with a good range of accommodation. There are few decent restaurants and shops, while nightlife is pretty limited (gambling is legal, though). Service can also be a little short of perfection, especially by North American standards. Nearby Yellowstone National Park is well worth a visit. But people, experts in particular, go to Big Sky for the skiing and boarding, not for off-snow pursuits. It is 7 hours from the nearest international airport (Salt Lake City)…
