Lauterbrunnen
Overview
Lauterbrunnen isn't a ski area at all, but a picturesque railway halt and a convenient, less expensive base from which to explore, the classic Jungfrau region resorts of Wengen and Mürren by rail, with the added bonus of an extraordinarily scenic visit to the Eiger and Jungfrau. It also provides the finishing line – if there is sufficient snow – to the celebrated 10 mile 'Inferno' race from Mürren's Schilthorn. Mürren and Wengen are separated by the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, but by using the mountain railway it is possible to get from one to the other – and link with Grindelwald, too – with comparative ease.
