Mount Buller
Overview
Arguably the biggest ski area in Australia (based on the number of lifts), Mount Buller is a three-and-a-half hour drive from Melbourne through Ned Kelly country and has some of the most impressive scenery in the Victorian Alps. There are extensive views across the eucalyptus forests, known colloquially as 'gums'. Of the 25 lifts, eight are quads, including one called Wombat. There is substantial snow-making and 80km of trails, the longest of which is 2.5km. In general, the skiing is of good intermediate standard, although there are more black diamond trails than blue. The black runs from the summit on the outer edge of the area can be very tricky and even dangerous if they become icy.
