Tummy bugs

Natural remedies can help prevent upset stomachs, when travelling in foreign climes.

Traveller's diarrhoea is well known to blight many a holidaymaker's trip abroad and is usually caused by a bacterial or parasitic infection. The source of these infections is usually food or drink and there are certain steps that can be taken to reduce your risk of an upset stomach.

Only eat foods that are hot and freshly prepared. Fruit should only be eaten if you have peeled it yourself. Drink bottled water and recently boiled hot drinks like tea or coffee. Avoid ice that has been made from suspect tap water.

Taking a supplement containing healthy gut bacteria can often prevent traveller's diarrhoea. One of the roles healthy gut bacteria has is to keep unhealthy organisms at bay here. People who have low levels of healthy gut bacteria do seem to be more prone to suffering from tummy upsets when travelling abroad.

Also taking a good quality acidophilus supplement for at least two weeks before you leave for a holiday can help, and you should continue taking this while away. If possible, keep this product refrigerated because this will help to maintain the bacteria's properties.
