Public Recreational Ski Jumping.
Jumping hills are divided into sizes between small (from 20m) to flying hills, which can allow jumps as long as 185m. Most major competitions use a 70-metre and a 90-metre hill. Competitors are awarded points for distance and style. Falls, wobbles, or incorrect positions result in deduction of points. The best two of three jumps are counted.
Jumpers use very long (around 2m40), flat skis. These have no edges and may have several grooves in the base to keep them straight in flight. Helmets are worn, and clothes tend to be slightly baggy to retain air and increase the distance of the jump.
The V style, flying with the skis' tails together and tips apart, first appeared in the early 90s. The extra distance more than made up for the loss of style points, and the position was rapidly accepted by competitors.
Nordic combined
This is a two-event competition consisting of a 15km cross country race and a jump. The two best jumps of three from a 70m hill are counted, and competitors then set off cross country in the order of their jumps. There are also team events.
