Skiing Competition

Over the years, the number of different skiing disciplines has snowballed. Most traditional are the Nordic events, which are direct descendants of military competitions. Next on the scene were the Alpine disciplines, which were joined in the late seventies by Freestyle, then called Hotdogging. Now there are full competition circuits for snowboarding, telemark skiing, extreme and free skiing.

Each main discipline boasts a World Cup circuit, which takes competitors to a different resort in the Alps, North America, Scandinavia or Japan each week during the winter. This is backed up by the Europa Cup and Nor-Am circuits, as well as FIS, national cup and local races.

The most prestigious competitions, and the ones that generate most media interest, are the World Championships, which generally take place every two years, and Olympics, which take place every four. The last Olympics took place in Salt Lake City in the year 2002.
